God’s Wonderful World: Women’s Group meet at St Luke’s

Forty countries in nine years… that is how many Jean and Bob Wickens have visited while they have lived in Cyprus.

On 16 October some 26 women met at St Luke’s to enjoy an entertaining illustrated talk by Jean about their travels to places as far-flung as Oman, Iceland, Chile and Japan. Jean punctuated her talk with amusing anecdotes about once-in-a-lifetime experiences like staying in a Buddhist monastery in Japan, witnessing floods in the desert of Oman and seeing whales and glaciers in Iceland.

She cleverly avoided “death by holiday snap” by grouping a myriad images into topics like food, religious buildings and modes of transport, making for a fascinating and funny address. Many thanks to her and to the women of St. Luke’s for the delicious tea that followed.

The next meeting of the Women’s Group will take place at 3pm Thursday 20 November at St. Stephen’s when our speaker will be Julie Hellon Cupples who went over to Kenya in 2010 with her family and saw the appalling poverty with many children living on the rubbish tip in a village called Namatotoa. Julie returned home and in 2011 founded a small charity ‘Help Kenyan Kids’ with the aim of helping the most underprivileged and deprived members of the village. We look forward to hearing Julie and finding out about the Charity and also to hear about Julie’s future plans.
